“Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.” (Luke 24:13-16)
On the day that Jesus rose from the dead he came alongside Cleopas and his companion. I think it was Cleopas and his wife. This was the first day of the new creation and Jesus took a walk with a man and his wife to talk about the events of their lives. Can you hear a sigh from road-to-emmausJesus as he thought back to that day, years upon years before, when he came to walk in the garden in the cool of the day with Adam and Eve, but they hid from him? Now, another couple, another walk, let’s start again…and they don’t recognize him.
We hide from Jesus. We hide intentionally and we hide by our inability to recognize him when he is right next to us.
This Sunday we start our new theme, Experiencing God. I am basing this theme on the book by the same title by Henry Blackaby. In his book, Blackaby describes seven principles he finds in the bible for how we come to know and do the will of God and in that way grow in our experience with God. The first principle is this, God is always at work around us. This truth paves the way for our ability to experience God. Come Sunday at 11 am ready to look for Jesus!
Easter Sunday is April 5. Come celebrate with Journey3 at 11 am. We are very casual in dress and very real in relationships. Journey3 meets at Rivergate Church, 4737 N Lombard St in North Portland (next to Western Meats). Our worship will be followed by a brunch. Everyone is welcome!
This Wednesday, February 18, is Ash Wednesday. At 6 pm, Journey3 will hold a special Ash Wednesday service. This is the beginning of Lent, which is a time of reflection and renewal leading up to Easter. Come Wednesday to our location at Rivergate Church for this time of quiet and reflection on the meaning of Lent. We will be offering the sign of ashes on the forehead as a mark of our desire to come close to God.
The Israelites’ liberation from Egypt isn’t just a long-ago Bible story. We each find ourselves enslaved: to work, to destructive relationships, to food, to spending… but beyond our personal Egypt lies God’s promised land. Let’s learn how the wilderness journey can help us face our fears, receive our new identity, experience transformation and live into our newfound freedom.
God with Us. Hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus the prophet Isaiah foretold that a virgin would give birth to a son and his name would be Immanuel which means God with us. Ever since the first Christmas people have been talking about the meaning of that name. Can it be true? Could it be that God wants to be with us, with me, with you? Come discover with us the meaning of Immanuel. Sundays, 11 am, in December. We are very informal on Sunday mornings. We meet in the worship area for 30 minutes then go downstairs for refreshments and discussion. We finish by 12:15.
Come for dinner and hear from several of our serving partners here in North Portland. We will meet in the basement at Rivergate Church for a meal and then will hear from Linda Jo Devlaeminck with The Community of Hope, Gary Davis with Operation Nightwatch and David Brewer with All One Community Services. This is a great opportunity to find out how these organizations are serving locally and how we can be involved directly or indirectly.
Please RVSP to Jay Braband by calling or texting 503-867-6464 so that we can plan for the meal. Admission is free!
Come celebrate Easter with Journey3! Sunday, April 20, at 11 am we will meet for worship and brunch. We meet at Rivergate Church, 4737 N Lombard St, across from Don Lee Motors.
Come for food and for a fun movie which has some interesting themes. Man of Steel…. you probably know is another Superman movie, but it is, in this reviewer’s opinion, the best of the lot. Journey3 is sponsoring the meal and movie. We meet at Rivergate Church, 4737 N Lombard St. The meal is at 5:30 pm on Friday, March 21, with the movie starting around 6 pm.
This Sunday, March 9, we are beginning a new theme for our Journey3 worship gatherings. John Ortberg begins his book, Who is This Man as follows,
“On the day after Jesus’ death, it looked as if whatever small mark he left on the world would rapidly disappear. Instead, his impact on human history has been unparalleled.”
In our theme over the next couple of months we will look at the life of Jesus and his historical impact on children, women, education, government, health care and marriage. We will see that Jesus turned the world upside down by reversing what people value so that virtues such as humility, forgiveness and servanthood became forces for social change. We will watch as Jesus calls every person to leave the life of hypocrisy and find the power needed to live authentically. On Easter Sunday, April 20, we will marvel at the radically new life that Jesus promises to people who are willing to live as if they are already dead.
This will be a great theme! How can it not be? It’s about Jesus! So invite your friends for some marvelous discussion starting this Sunday at 11 am.
Please be praying.
Pray for Michelle. She needs to find a job soon!
Pray for Lauren. She is leaving on a mission trip to Haiti this Friday.
Pray for Journey3. Pray that we would grow closer to Jesus and that we would shine more clearly with the love of Jesus.
Can you recall our memory verses? Psalm 119:11, 32, Matthew 28:18-20. This Sunday we will add to the list.
Movie Night is coming Friday, March 21. Supper will be at 5:30 pm with the movie, Man of Steel, starting at 6 pm at Rivergate. Invite your friends for a fun evening!
Remember, you are the light of the world!
We will be joining our ministry partners, Rivergate Community Church, for Christmas Eve worship at 4:30 pm on December 24. This will be a time for singing, celebrating the Lord’s Supper and candlelight. Come and bring a friend!
